Top Tips for Straighter Hair

Straight is ‘the’ fashionable way to wear your hair. It can add glamour, sophistication and sex appeal. Whether your hair is short or long, it is easy to create a straight style. There are a number of ways you can achieve the straight look.

Salon Treatment

This has been described as the opposite to a perm, when chemicals are applied which make your hair straight. Some treatments last up to 6 months, others are more short term (6weeks). However, these treatments can be costly (£20-£250) and, like perming, can dry and damage your hair.

Hair Straighteners

These allow you to create poker straight styles from home. The most effective straighteners are the ones with ceramic plates, as these hold a very high temperature, heat up quickly and are easy to use. They vary in price (£20-£100) and the most effective ones have variable temperature control, so you can choose the right temperature for your hair. They can damage your hair, however, so you may need to use products which protect it, or use the straighteners less frequently.

Self Styling

To straighten your hair using your hairdryer and a brush. This is the least expensive way to straighter hair at home. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Wash and condition your hair. Use products that are suitable for your hair type (dry, damaged, fine, fragile).
  2. Using a towel gently blot your hair dry.
  3. While it is still damp, separate your hair into lots of sections and secure these on the top of your head with clips.
  4. Taking the first section, begin to dry your hair. The nozzle of the hairdryer should always be pointing downwards, and you should be continuously brushing you hair straight as you dry it. A large round bristle brush is most effective for this. To keep hair straight, apply hairspray liberally before beginning to dry.
  5. Continue this process until all sections are dry
  6. To finish, for extra shine, use a blast of cool air on your hair.
  7. The outcome should be shiny, fabulously straight hair!

These steps can be altered to suit your hair type, so for…

  • Straight, fine hair

If you want some volume, remember to lift your hair from the roots while drying. Use the slowest speed on your hairdryer, but with a high heat setting.
  • Fine hair with a slight wave

Same as above, but use a flat bristle brush, as this will help to take out the wave.
  • Thick and wavy hair

Use a large round bristle brush. You won’t need to lift and dry from the roots, but make sure you brush continually. Use a fast speed on your hairdryer, and a high heat setting.
  • Thick, curly and frizzy hair

Again, keep brushing the hair straight as you dry, and ensure the nozzle of the hairdryer is pointing downwards to avoid frizz.
